HISTORY
BUILT BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MANUFACTURERS OF ARCHITECTURAL IRON AND BRONZE IN THE UNITED STATES, HECLA IRON WORKS IS A WILLIAMSBURG LANDMARK. Hecla Iron Works takes its name from an active volcano in Iceland. Founded in 1896, the property is a standing showcase of the types of architectural and ornamental metalwork produced within its walls throughout the 20th century.
The work created inside this historic building has made an impact across the city. Hecla Iron Works created middle-class jobs in a growing neighborhood and supplied ornamental work for the exteriors and interiors of many designated New York City Landmarks.
The iron produced within the building shaped the city we know today—from the towering Flatiron clock to the the 133 original kiosks for the IRT subway system.
Building
RESTORED FOR A MODERN ERA, HECLA IRON WORKS IS READY TO SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION. This is where people brought ideas to life and built things that stood the test of time...and we like it that way. So we’ve kept the building’s authentic, architectural character, and filled it with modern updates and contemporary conveniences.
Its groin-vaulted archways, hardwood floors, and ornate iron details—highlighting years of hard work and creativity—are a visual inspiration for a new generation of innovators.
The acoustics of the high ceilings serve as the foundation for a space built to inspire community and collaboration. The placement of hundreds of windows creates an open, bright environment that fosters productivity throughout the building. And the green space on our roof provides a space to breathe, relax and take it all in.
